Ambos lagos seescogieron por sus especiales caracter\u00c2\u00bfsticas hidrogeoqu\u00c2\u00bfmicas, son lagos merom\u00c2\u00bfcticoscon alto contenido en metales disueltos. La distribuci\u00c2\u00bfn de la comunidad microbianaest\u00c2\u00bf condicionada por la disponibilidad de f\u00c2\u00bfsforo. Este se encuentra atrapado encomplejos de hierro (iii) en la capa \u00c2\u00bfxica superior. El fitoplancton se concentra aprofundidad de baja disponibilidad lum\u00c2\u00bfnica donde el f\u00c2\u00bfsforo est\u00c2\u00bf biol\u00c2\u00bfgicamentedisponible ya que difunde desde la capa de transici\u00c2\u00bfn donde es liberado cuando elhierro (iii) es reducido. El fitoplancton sirve como fuente de carbono para lacomunidad microbiana de la capa de transici\u00c2\u00bfn la cual determina los ciclosbiogeoqu\u00c2\u00bfmicos del hierro y del azufre en esta zona de los lagos. Adem\u00c2\u00bfs, se describencuatro nuevas especies (incluyendo un g\u00c2\u00bfnero nuevo) de bacterias acid\u00c2\u00bffilas y una debacteria acido-tolerante aisladas de muestras de agua y sedimentos de ambos lagos. Por\u00c2\u00bfltimo, se estudia la posibilidad de usar especies bacterianas presentes en estosambientes en procesos aplicados de biorremediaci\u00c2\u00bfn y biolixiviaci\u00c2\u00bfn. Se demuestra laposibilidad de movilizar el aluminio disuelto en aguas \u00c2\u00bfcidas mediante la actividad debacterias sulfato-reductoras acid\u00c2\u00bffilas, simulando lo que ocurre en aguas del lagocueva de la mora.
