Se encuentra que la cloracion nuclear de los hidrocarburos transcurre rapidamente y con un rendimiento muy alto en monocloro-derivados. En la cloracion de mezclas de m-xileno p-xileno o de xilol industrial tiene lugar la cloracion selectiva del m-xileno. El rendimiento en monocloros y la selectividadaumentan con la concentracion del alcohol. A temperaturas inferiores a 5 grados c se clora exclusivamente el alcohol formando el correspondiente hipoclorito de aquilo  lo que sugiere su intervencion en la cloracion del hidrocarburo aromatico. Este aspecto se comprueba estudiando la variacion de las bandas oh y od de los espectros infrarrojos de muestras de la cloracion de m-xileno o p-xileno en etanol deuterado y de p-xileno decadeuterado
