Este precursor es procesado a su forma madura por un enzima mitocondrial.  el precursor se transporta al interior de la mitocondria muy rapidamente  permaneciendo en el citosol un tiempo medio de 3-4 min. El transporte requiere un potencial de membrana en la mitocondria. Tambien es esencial para el transporte la presencia del segmento peptidico adicional.  el precursor de glutamato deshidrogenasa de higado de rata puede ser reconocido y transportado por mitocondrias de otros animales.
