La subunidad beta del enzima de higado de rata se sintetiza en el citosol como un precursor mas largo que la subunidad beta madura  la diferencia consiste en un segmento adicional de mr aproximadamente 1500. Una vez ha tenido lugar su sintesis  la proteina se transporta al interior de la mitocondria donde se produce el corte proteolitico del extremo adicional. Dicho extremo peptidico estra es imprescindible para que se produzca la entrada en la mitocondria  si dicho extremo peptidico se elimina mediante un extracto crudo mitocondrial  libre de membranas  y que contiene el enzima intramitocondrial responsable del procesado del precursor  a la subunidad madura  la subunidad beta madura no se transporta al interior de la mitocondria. Estos resultados se han obtenido tanto  in vitro  realizando la sintesis en un sistema libre de celulas y luego el transporte a mitocondrias aisladas de higadode rata  como  in vivo utilizando hepatocitos de rata.
