Los sustratos estudiados han sido: glucosa 30m glucosa glicerol  alanina  alfa-aminoisobutirato y lactato. Se ha evidenciado la permeabilidad de la placenta de rata a todos aquellos sustratos. Los tejidos fetales utilizan glucosa  glicerol y lactato para la sintesis de lipidos. El tejido adiposo materno utiliza los mencionados sustratos en adicion de la alanina para la sintesis de lipidos. Se ha demostrado el escaso flujo gluconeogenico existente en la unidad fetoplacentaria.
