Sin embargo  la interconversion in vivo no requiere la participacion de la actividad diaforasa del complejo  y tiene lugar mediante un proceso de reduccion en el que participan donadores endogenos diferentes al nad(p)h. El desarrollo del sistema de consumo de nitrito y la sintesis de la actividad nitrito reductasa son procesos paralelos  reprimibles por amonio. La reduccion de nitrito se regula exclusivamente por mecanismos de sintesis-degradacion. La energia metabolica y poder reductor necesarios para el consumo de nitrito proceden en su mayor parte de reacciones fotosinteticas  aunque tambien tienen su origen en reacciones catabolicas oscuras. El amonio inhibe reversiblemente el consumo de nitrito  su accion inhibidora tiene dos componentes: uno debido al amonio per se y otro dependiente de los productos de su asimilacion. La entrada de nitrito en la celula se lleva a cabo mediante una permeasa especifica de alta afinidad.
