El crecimiento celular se inicia en el vegetal cuando la pared celular pierde su rigidez por alteraciones metabolicas  cambios bioquimicos y fisicoquimicos que se producen en los componentes estructurales de la misma. La pared celular primaria esta constituida por polisacaridos y proteinas. Se han separado 3 fracciones de polisacaridos: alfa-celulosa hemicelulosas y pectinas. Las hemicelulosas en monocotiledoneas estan constituidas por 3 polimeros mayoritarios: arabinoxilano  xiloglucano y beta-glucano de los que se estudiaron los cambios que tienen lugar durante el
