La placenta humana presenta isoenzimas de la adh y de la aldh muy poco activas frente a etanol y acetaldehido  por lo que no podran procurar una adecuada proteccion del feto en caso de intoxicacion alcoholica de la madre. En cuanto a posibles funciones fisiologicos de estos isoenzimas  mientras la adh de placenta es mas activa frente a alcoholes de cadena alifatica larga  como octanol y w-hidroxiacidos  la aldm de placenta es mas eficiente frente a sustratos de cadena mas corta  como propanal semialdehido succinico.
