El paso clave en la obtenci\u00f3n de energia es la transferencia del fosfato desde el carbomilfosfato al adp, catalizada por la carbamato quinasa. Tras secuenciar un fragmento del cromosomo de e.Faecalis de 8228 pb por ambas hebras en peque\u00f1os fragmentos solapantes, hemos localizado los genes para estos tres enzimas estrechamente agrupados junto con un gen para el transporte de arginina y un posible regulador transcripcional de la familia crp-fnr. La identidad de los genes para la arginina deiminasa y la carbamato quinasa ha sido corroborada por sobreexpresion en e.Coli, y el de la ornitina trancarbamilasa por comparaci\u00f3n de la secuencia predicha con la composicion de aminoacidos conocida de esta proteina y mediante secuenciacion aminoterminal. La implicaci\u00f3n del gen para el posible transportador de arginina ha sido corroborada por el analisis del fenotipo de una cepa mutante de e.Faecalis, fabricada por nosotros mediante tecnicas de recombinacion homologa, con dicho gen interrumpido por un gen de resistencia a un antibiotico. Estos cinco genes son transcritos en un mensajero policistronico, producido a partir de un unico promotor, como revelan los analisis por northern blot de extractos de rna total de e.Faecalis y de determinacion de puntos de inicio de la transcripcion. Tambien mediante northern blot hemos demostrado la induccion del mensajero del operon en cultivos de e.Faecalis crecidos en presencia de arginina, y la falta de induccion cuando se a\u00f1ade glucosa
