En este trabajo se ha evaluado el potencial riesgo genot\u00f3xico que la exposici\u00f3n a estireno puede implicar mediante la realizaci\u00f3n de un estuido in vitro utilizando estireno-7,8-\u00f3xido (so) que es su principal metabolito nocivo, y de un estudio in vio en una poblaci\u00f3n de trabajadores de f\u00e1bricas de pl\u00e1sticos reforzados con fibra de vidrio, ya que es en estas industrias donde se producen las mayores exposiciones humanas a esta sustancia.  los resutlados del estudio in vitro muestran que la exposici\u00f3n de leucocitos perif\u00e9ricos humanos a so induce da\u00f1o citogen\u00e9tico, evaluado mediante los tests de intercambios entre crom\u00e1tidas hermanas y micron\u00facleos, y da\u00f1o en el adn, evaluado mediante la prueba del cometa, en concentraciones superiores a 50 um, estando ambos tipos de da\u00f1o fuertemente relacionados. El estudio de los cambios en la expresi\u00f3n de los genes p53, p21, bcl-2 y bax muestra que la exposici\u00f3n de linfocitos humanos a niveles elevados de so induce retraso en el ciclo celular de los linfocitos, probablemente encaminado a permitir la actuaci\u00f3n de los sistemas de reparaci\u00f3n sobre el da\u00f1o causado, m\u00e1s que a dirigir a las c\u00e9lulas hacia una muerte celular programada o apoptosis.  en el estudio poblacional se han obtenido incrementos significativos en el da\u00f1o citogen\u00e9tico y sobre el adn en un grupo de individuos expuestos a estireno a niveles cercanos al valor l\u00edmite ambiental, fijado en 20 ppm por el instituto nacional de seguridad e higiene en el trabajo, respecto a una poblaci\u00f3n control. Estos resultados, junto con las elevadas correlaciones descritas entre los par\u00e1metros citogen\u00e9ticos y la longitud de la cola del cometa, justifican la utilizaci\u00f3n de los ensayos
