Tanto a escala molecular (isoenzimas) como cuantitativa (altura total, forma del fuste y supervivencia), con especial referencia del \u00e1mbito noroccidental de la especie.  adem\u00e1s de los an\u00e1lisis cl\u00e1sicos en gen\u00e9tica de poblaciones, se han utilizado t\u00e9cnicas geoestad\u00edsticas para profundizar en las causas y estructura de la variaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica. Por otra parte, se ha estudiado la estructura gen\u00e9tica local (autocorrelaci\u00f3n de alelos, endogamia y estructura familiar) y el flujo gen\u00e9tico en un rodal de la especie situado en la parte segoviana de la meseta castellana. A escala regional, se distinguen tres grupos de poblaciones claramente diferenciados: grupo noroeste, grupo sureste y grupo este, concentr\u00e1ndose la mayor parte de la diversidad y riqueza al\u00e9lica en los dos \u00faltimos.  existe una mayor diversidad gen\u00e9tica en las poblaciones cercanas a la costa mediterr\u00e1nea, reduci\u00e9ndose la misma seg\u00fan nos aproximamos al noroeste peninsular. dicha estructura puede explicarse mediante la existencia de refugios glaciares de la especie en zonas, pr\u00f3ximas a la costa, hoy ocupadas por poblaciones marginales de gran singularidad y riqueza al\u00e9lica. La variaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica cuantitativa est\u00e1 relacionada de forma muy d\u00e9bil con la variaci\u00f3n molecular, indicando la gran importancia de la selecci\u00f3n natural en el proceso de diferenciaci\u00f3n y adaptaci\u00f3n de esta especie a la gran variaci\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica de las estaciones que ocupa.  con respecto al an\u00e1lisis de la estructura gen\u00e9tica local se ha encontrado una autocorrelaci\u00f3n positiva de los alelos en el regenerado en clases de distancia menores de 15 m y que puede ser explicada por una dispersi\u00f3n restringida de la semilla. Dicha correlaci\u00f3n no se mantiene en la poblaci\u00f3n adulta, a pesar de presentar \u00e9sta una estructura familiar similar a la del regenerado.
