Los parametros de respuesta mas sensibles son la riqueza de especies y la composicion taxonomica.  los experimentos con cadmio muestran que la toxicidad del metal depende de la concentracion en las celulas y en el ambiente, estando relacionada esta con el ph. El efecto negativo del cadmio en las comunidades de protozoos se traduce en una sustitucion de las especies sensibles por otras resistentes, en una reduccion dela abundancia y la biomasa y, ademas, en un cambio en la diversidad de especies. Por el contrario, el toxico no causa la eliminacion de ningun grupo trofico en concreto. Las comunidades de protozoos muestran mecanismos de tolerancia. Los experimentos realizados con el plomo indican que este ion es toxico, causando una disminucion del numero de especies, de la abundancia y de la biomasa delas comunidades de protozoos. Tambien se observa una reestructuracion de las comunidades de protozoos.
