Fueron seleccionados seis caballos (tres machos y tres hembras) de 310-420 kg de peso para determinar la analgesia, efectos centrales, y efectos cardiorespiratorios, de la ketamina administrada por via epidural con tres dosis diferentes (0,5, 1,0 y 2,0 mg\/kg). Dos meses antes de empezar las experiencias la arteria carotida comun izquierda fue exteriorizada quirurgicamente. Un cateter epidural fue implantado en el espacio epidural entre las vertebras co1-co2, y fijado externamente a la piel. Se confirmo la posicion correcta del cateter inyectando lidocaina 1% y comprobando su efecto analgesico. Una semana mas tarde las tres dosis de ketamina o salino (control) fueron administradas en los animales colocados en potros de contencion (fase i). En una segunda fase (ii) se combino ketamina (1 mg\/kg) con los siguientes farmacos: lidocaina (0,2 mg\/kg), xilacina (0,17 mg\/kg) y fentanilo (1  g\/kg). Antes de las experiencias, y ajustadas en dosis y volumen para cada caballo, la ketamina fue diluida en salino 0,9%. La analgesia fue comprobada mediante la estimulacion dolorosa con pinchazos, utilizando una aguja de 23g, y determinando el grado de respuesta en una escala de dolor. Se utilizo otra escala para verificar el grado de sedacion. La respuesta al estimulo doloroso y el grado de sedacion fue medida a intervalos previamente determinados: basal y 2, 5, 10, 15 minutos, y despues cada 15 minutos, post-administracion de ketamina o salino. Todas las dosis de ketamina produjeron analgesia de la cola, perine y grupa. La respuesta fue dosis-dependiente, siendo el tiempo de duracion de la analgesia similar para cola y perine (45 minutos para 0,5 y 1,0 mg\/kg y 90 minutos para 2,0 mg\/kg).
