En ella los dos temas propuestos, el amor y la muerte, vertebran la relacion del escritor no solo con el mundo, sino con su propia escritura, siendo temas fundamentales que la mirada modernista retoma. De la romantica para establecer un debate con el proceso de modernizacion positivista. Frente a el los cuentos modernistas son una muestra de la fuerza de los sentimental y emocional como reivindicacion del caracter subjetivo del arte. Asimismo la postura modernista ante el amor evidencia una progresiva puesta en discurso de lo sexual como parte de la naturaleza. La muerte, por su parte, comienza a afianzarse en una filosofia pesimista que busca refugio en doctrinas esotericas. Finalmente amor y muerte se imbrican en una relacion de atraccion y repulsion mutuas que denota la multiplicidad de impulsos que laten en el movimiento modernista dentro de un periodo de
