Las motoneuronas laringeas, objeto principal de este estudio, se identificaron electrofisiologicamente mediante estimulacion antidromica del nervio recurrente ipsilateral.  la mayoria de las neuronas registradas se activaron durante la fase inspiratoria del ciclo. Se valoro la actividad de estas motoneuronas y neuronas inspiratorias tanto en situacion de eupnea como durante aumento de resistencia pulmonar. Tambien se estudio esa actividad durante la respuesta refleja de tos provocada mediante estimulacion mecanica de la mucosa traqueal en ambas condiciones respiratorias.  durante la tos, las motoneuronas laringeas inspiratorias (mnli) cambiaron su patron de descarga mostrando actividad tonica durante la inspiracion y la espiracion.  otras neuronas inspiratorias (ni) mantuvieron su patron de descarga aunque mostraron una elevacion significativa de su frecuencia durante la fase inspiratoria. El aumento de la resistencia pulmonar, no provoco modificacion significativa de la actividad de las mnli aunque si la hubo de otras ni. Durante la estimulacion mecanica de la mucosa traqueal con aumento de la resistencia pulmonar, las mnli mostraron actividad tonica inspiratoria-espiratoria mientras que las ni redujeron su rapido
