Tradicionalmente, el reformador del carmelo ha sido exclusivamente valorado por su lirica. Partiendo de los principios de la retorica clasica, como ejes que vertebran nuestra metodolog\u00eda y teniendo como corpus de nuestro analisis el propio texto de \u00abllama de amor viva\u00bb, hemos tratado de demostrar como en esta obra, sintesis y cima de la mistica experimental se encuentran formas retoricas de gran complejidad y riqueza estilistica. Los tres tipos de estilo, (llano, templado y sublime) son utilizados por san juan con gran precision y libertad innovativa. Una cuestion retorica importante y a la que se da por el mistico solucion original es la del ritmo, solucion intermedia entre la concinnitas y el numerus. El ornato, elemento estetico del discurso, se nuclea en torno al simbolo, elemento capital de la prosa de llama mistica, teologica y literariamente; solo por el simbolo ha podido san juan codificar una prosa vehemente, encendida y con clara dimension retorica.
