Acetilcolina (ach) tambien produce un incremento transitorio de la (ca2+)i.  los agonistas alfa1-adrenergicos y muscarinicos liberan ca2+ selectivamente de almacenes intracelulares, insensibles a cafeina, funcionalmente distintos.  ambos neurotransmisores (na y ach) activan dos corrientes ionicas transitorias: una de potasio (lk) y otra de cloruro (lcl) dependientes de ca2+.  la ach produce cambios bifasicos del potencial de membrana (despolarizacion e hiperpolarizacion).  el medio de cultivo tras varias horas de la siembra de pinealocitos contiene serotonina y melatonina.  los resultados obtenidos con las medidas de capacidad electrica y de amperometria sugieren que uno o varios de los productos sintetizados en la pineal son almacenados intracelularmente en vesiculas y
