Se obtuvo una filogenia parcial de dicha familia mediante el estudio del gen mitocondrial nadh3,empleando las especies zalophotrema atlanticum campula oblonga (pertenecientes a la subfamilia campulinae), hadwenius tursionis, oschmarinella mascomai, y orthosplanchnus fraterculus (pertenecientes a la subfamilia orthosplanchninae). Ademas, se uso nasitrema globicephalae para esclarecer las relaciones entre las familias campulidae y nasitrematidae. Dicrocoelium dendriticum y fasciola hepatica fueron empleados como \u00aboutgroups\u00bb. Los datos de la filogenia molecular obtenida se contrastaron con los de la taxonomia tradicional, demostrando lo artificial de la agrupacion de los generos de la familia campulidae en las subfamilias antes mencionadas. Ademas, el representante de la familia nasitrematidae aparecio formando un grupo monofiletico con el resto de campulidos. Se evaluaron hipotesis alternativas preliminares de coevolucion y colonizacion para intentar explicar el origen y subsecuente asociacion entre los campulidos y sus hospedadores. Pueden destacarse tres procesos implicados en dicha asociacion:  (a) los misticetos poseerian campulidos exclusivos y no compartidos con los de otros mamiferos marinos. Ello podria estar relacionado con la divergencia trofica de este grupo frente a otros cetaceos, que impediria intercambios posteriores a traves de redes troficas; (b) hunterotrema habria quedado aislado desde su origen por el confinamiento ecologico historico de sus hospedadores y (c) los delfines, marsopas y pinnipedos habrian mantenido una larga y compleja historia de coevolucion e intercambio de campulidos a diferentes escalas filogeneticas merced a la coincidencia basica en sus regimenes troficos.
