El estudio se realizo a lo largo de dos ciclos anuales: 1987-88 y 1990-91. Paralelamente al muestreo fitoplanctologico se determino: temperatura, condictividad, o disuelto, transparencia, nitratos, nitritos, fosfatos, silicatos, clorofila a y clorofila total. Las bajas concentraciones en nutrientes, labuena oxigenacion de la columna de agua y las elevadas transparencias observadas, se reflejan en concentraciones celulares normalmente muy bajas y que indican una fuerte oligotrofia en estas aguas. Se ha constatado la presencia de mas de 300 taxones fitoplanctonicos en el area de estudio, de los cuales mas de 250 han sido determinados hasta el nivel de especie. Se ha prestado un interes especial al grupo de las cocolitofoforales, presentando un catalogo de mas de 40 especies fotografiadas al m.E.B.  las diatomeas constituyen la fraccion mas representada, principalmente durante el invierno. Los dinoflagelados y cocolitoforidos constituyen dos grupos importantes caracterizados por una gran diversidad de especies, si bien sus abundancias siempre son menores que las de el grupo anterior. El resto de grupos fitoplanctonicos (silicoflagelados, euglenoficeas, criptomonadales, etc.) constituyen una fracion muy peque\u00f1a y poco diversificada.  el estudio de los grupos de asociacion indica la existencia de comunidades invernales, estivales y de periodos templados. Las diversidades se mantienen muy altas durante todo el a\u00f1o, siendo los valores superiores a 3,5 y a 4,0 bits los mas habituales.
