El enfoque del desarrollo familiar resulta de interes en el estudio de la enfermedad cronica; considerar al individuo como elemento en interaccion con un sistema familiar favorece un analisis mas completo de las variables a tener en cuenta en los programas de intervencion.  nuestro objetivo en el presente trabajo es:  * considerar el funcionamiento familiar de los adolescentes diabeticos, su percepcion del estres diario y las estrategias de afrontamiento que utiliza, asi como observar sus diferencias con otros jovenes no diabeticos.  * explorar las relaciones existentes entre las variables fundamentales de nuestra investigacion (funcionamiento familiar, estrategias de afrontamiento, percepcion del estres diario, lugar de control) y las variables especificas de la enfermedad (adherencia al tratamiento, tiempo de diagnostico, complicaciones, dificultades en el manejo de la enfermedad).  * finalmente, relacionar todas ellas con los datos individuales y familiares (sexo, edad, estudios, n de hermanos, orden de nacimiento, edad y estudios de los padres).  se realizo el estudio con un total de 200 jovenes de 14 a 20 a\u00f1os de edad, distribuidos en dos muestras: una clinica, compuesta por 100 jovenes diabeticos, y una control para la comparacion, formada por 100 jovenes sin patolog\u00eda cronica en el ambito familiar.  los instrumentos utilizados fueron: a) entrevistas para recoger datos personales, familiares y clinicos. B) cuestionarios: escala de clima social en la familia (fes) de r. H. Moos, (1974); adaptacion de fernandez ballesteros, r y sierra, b. (1984). Cuestionario de afrontamiento familiar (f-copes) de mc cubbin, h., Olson, d. H y larsen, a.S. (1981); adaptacion de serra, e. Y ruano, r.A.
