Y sambucus ebulus l. Contienen en todos sus tejidos proteinas inactivadoras de ribosomas (rips) constituidas por dos cadenas, una con actividad enzimatica que rompe el enlace n-glucosidico de una adenina del rna ribosomico mayor de mamiferos, y la otra con actividad lectina capaz de ligarse a restos de galactosa, ambas unidas por puentes disulfuro. Se caracterizan fundamentalmente por su baja toxicidad en celulas intactas y en ratones, en contraste con las rips de dos cadenas aisladas hasta ahora, como la ricina que inhibe fuertemente la sintesis de proteinas en celulas intactas y resulta muy toxica in vivo. El estudio de la internalizacion de nigrina b demuestra que esta sigue una ruta intracelular diferente a la ricina, alcanzando el citosol desde el endosoma. Cuando estas nuevas rips no toxicas del sambucus se unen a transportadores especificos como la transferrina su toxicidad aumenta considerablemente. Estas caracteristicas las hace muy utiles para la construccion de inmunotoxinas fundamentalmente para la terapia del cancer.
