A fin de ordenar las diferentes acepciones con que se utiliza esta nocion, se confronta la especulacion teorica de musicologos y compositores con el trabajo practico de estos ultimos.  el capitulo ii aborda la dimension temporal en la musica bajo un doble aspecto:  el punto i retoma los analisis de tendencia formalista para los que el trabajo del compositor consistira fundamentalmente en dar forma al tiempo. En el punto ii se dedica una atencion especial a la cuestion del ritmo y a la formulacion de sus principales determinaciones.
