Para su definicion, se analizan datos sedimentologicos, petrograficos, mineralogicos y geoquimicos. La unidad, de edad albiense inf.-Medio esta compuesta por lutitas grises y negras con un alto contenido en materia organica, e intercalaciones de areniscas y brechas, depositadas en general, en un ambiente marino en condiciones reductoras.  entre otras, se extraen conclusiones paleogeograficas y diageneticas, estas ultimas a traves de la mineralogia de arcillas y el analisis de la materia organica. La petrografia de las areniscas, la geoquimica de elementos mayoritarios y trazas y los analisis de turmalinas y micas de caracter heredado apuntan hacia un area fuente comun para las tres series, por lo tanto hacia la misma mineralogia de partida en toda la unidad. La mineralogia actual es producto del diferente grado de madurez alcanzado por los sedimentos. La evolucion alcanzada por los interestratificados i\/s junto el valor del indice de kubler define un grado diagenetico desigual segun zonas, superior en el sector de orozko donde se alcanza la anquizona.  se propone un modelo subsidente y termico a partir del cual se analiza la potencialidad de hidrocarburos de la formacion.
