En la costa de la depresion Valencia-castellon existe una serie de de zonas humedas (marjales) de de formas alargadas y paralelas a la linea de costa, separadas del mar por un cordon litoral. Su desarrollo tiene lugar a lo largo del holoceno y adaptan su forma a la morfolog\u00eda establecida por los depositos pleistocenos preexistentes. En ellas se depositan materiales palustres (limos organicos y turba), coincidiendo el inicio de su deposicion (5500-6300 a\u00f1os bp), con una etapa calida y sub-humeda a humeda (fairbridge, 1976) detectada en el norte de africa (wengler y vernet, 1992), y con el desarrollo de otras turberas del hemisferio norte (zoltai y vitt, 1990).  posteriormente sufrieron una importante regresion-mayor influencia de sedimiento aloctono- en un periodo templano-frio y arido (1300-1200 a\u00f1os bp). Su alimentacion tiene lugar por aguas subterraneas, con escasa influencia superficial y marina -por intrusion marina o de tempestades ocasionales-. Los depositos palustres se adaptan a una morfolog\u00eda, determinada por cuerpos sedimientarios precedentes, abanicos aluviales y abanicos deltaicos, limitados al mar por un cordon litoral.  la posible influencia marina de las turberas queda reflejada en las caracteristicas mineralogicas y geoquimicas, asi como en rasgos sedimentologicos y faunisticos, si bien en las primeras, por la naturaleza de los depositos organicos, se evidencian mejor peque\u00f1as variaciones de salinidad. La geoquimica de algunos elementos -fundamentalmente b, sr, br, i, s, fe, na, ca, li, zr, rb- refleja una transgresion marina poco importante durante el holoceno en esta zona.
