Se estudian 720 mineros no neumoconioticos sin lesiones pleurales en un primer control radiologico.  se distribuyen en tres grupos: grupo no expuesto a silice, grupo con baja exposicion a silice (grupo 1) y grupo con alta exposicion a silice (grupo 2). De cada minero se evaluo la rx de torax mas antigua y mas reciente que se disponia.  resultados en 43 mineros se detectaron lesiones pleurales en un segundo control radiologico. Cinco (2.4%) pertenecian al grupo no expuesto, 8 (6%) pertenecian al grupo 1 y 30 (8%) pertenecian al grupo 2 (p=0.022). Dado que tambien se detectaron diferencias entre los grupos de exposicion en cuanto a edad, habito tabaquico, tiempo total trabajado, tiempo trancurrido entre los dos controles radiologicos y presencia de fracturas costales en la rx, se realizo una regresion logistica multivariante que puso de manifiesto que las unicas variables que contribuian a explicar la lesion pleural eran el grupo de exposicion (grupo 1, or 5.7 p= 0.016; grupo 2, or 7.6 p=0.002) y las fracturas costales (or 3.7 p=0.007).  en 19 mineros la alteracion pleural hallada fue una obliteracion del seno costofrenico. Un trabajador (0.5%) pertenecia al grupo no expuesto, 3 (2.2%) al grupo 1 y 15 (4.2%) al grupo 2 (p=0.036). Al realizar una regresion logistica multivariante se constato que el grupo de exposicion era la unica variable que explicaba la obliteracion del seno costofrenico, siendo el riesgo relativo de 8.59 para los trabajadores del grupo 1 y de 16.44 para los del grupo 2 (p=0.021).  conclusiones 1. Los trabajadores no neumoconioticos expuestos a la inhalacion de silice presentan mayor numero de alteraciones pleurales que los trabajadores no expuestos.  2.
