Existen dos formas de diabetes, la diabetes mellitus dependiente de insulina (iddm) y la diabetes mellitus no dependiente de insulina (niddm). La patogenesis de la niddm implica interacciones complejas entre multiples factores, tanto geneticos como adquiridos. Debido a la cantidad y complejidad de alteraciones asociadas a la enfermedad, resulta muy dificil determinar cuales son los defectos primarios o causantes de la enfermedad y cuales son secundarios.  la entrada y el metabolismo de la glucosa en la celula beta son procesos necesarios para la sintesis y secrecion de la insulina. La captacion de la glucosa en estas celulas se realiza a traves de una proteina transportadora, el glut2. Se han descrito diferentes modelos animales de diabetes tipo ii, asi como pacientes humanos en los que la disminucion en la secrecion de insulina se correlaciona con una reduccion en los niveles de este transportador en la celula beta, aunque no queda claro si la disminucion del glut2 es una causa primaria del proceso patologico o si es consecuencia de la enfermedad.  en este trabajo se ha obtenido un animal transgenico que presenta una reduccion en los niveles de glut2 en las celulas beta pancreaticas, debido a la expresion de un rna antisentido contra esta proteina. En este animal se han estudiado los efectos de la disminucion de este transportador como defecto primario en los islotes pancreaticos y su repercusion a nivel sistemico. Los resultados obtenidos muestran una disminucion en el transporte y metabolismo de la glucosa en los islotes pancreaticos, asi como una alteracion en la secrecion de insulina estimulada por glucosa.
