El monomero esta compuesto por una unica cadena polipeptidica de 183 aminoacidos estando la cisteina (34) asociada covalentemente a un cromoforo a traves de un enlace resistente a la reduccion. La proteina hc muestra propiedades inmunorreguladoras in vitro y el complejo hc-iga es la cuarta especie de inmunoglobulina circulante mas abundante en plasma.  en esta tesis, se ha localizado el sitio de union entre la proteina hc y la iga, demostrandose la participacion del cromoforo en este enlace covalente de caracteristicas novedosas. Asimismo, se han aislado y purificado por primera vez otros dos complejos plasmaticos: hc-albumina y hc-iga-albumina, que presentan propiedades estructurales analogas al complejo hc-iga. Por otro lado, la proteina hc ha sido expresada en escherichia coli y celulas de insecto. Pudiendose utilizar la expresion en celulas de insecto como un metodo de obtencion de proteina hc para estudios de estructura y funcion. Por ultimo, se ha estudiado en profundidad la heterogeneidad en carga y masa de la proteina hc, aislandose y caracterizandose espectroscopicamente distintas subpoblaciones de la proteina, asi como
