En el diptero drosophila melanogaster estos genes se agrupan en dos complejos genicos: antennapedia y bithorax (c-bx). El trabajo presentado en la tesis ha versado sobre la regulacion y funcion de los tres genes homeoticos del c-bx (ubx, abd-a y abd-b) durante el desarrollo. Estos tres genes se encuentran adyacentes en el cromosoma y se extienden sobre regiones genomicas muy extensas. Asi, el gen ubx abarca unas 125 kb, de las que menos del 2% son codificantes. He mostrado, utilizando deficiencias inducidas por movilizacion de inserciones de elementos p, que las regiones genomicas comprendidas entre 61 y 17 kb del mapa genomico, y que eliminan el promotor del gen, no son estrictamente necesarias para conferir el patron de expresion de ubx en embriones tardios y en derivados imaginales, asi como tampoco lo son para ciertos procesos de regulacion de este gen. Las interacciones en trans en el gen ubx son moduladas por la presencia y naturaleza de los promotores en cis. Se ha determinado tambien que los dominios de activacion de las regiones reguladoras iab, que controlan la expresion de los genes abd-a y abd-b en segmentos especificos, son fijados anteriormente, mediante represion, por los genes hb y kr. El gentll limita posteriormente el dominio de abd-a y activa la expresion temprana de los dos elementos (m y r) de abd-b.  ademas se ha inducido una clase de mutaciones que definen la funcion iab8-9, que controla la formacion de los ultimos segmentos de abdomen a traves de la regulacion del gen abd-b.  la region posterior del abdomen, que incluye la region genital y la analia, proviene de un unico disco imaginal, el disco imaginal genital. Para estudiar los procesos de desarrollo en este disco, he llevado a cabo la caracterizacion genetica del mismo.
