Tras la introduccion del formalismo matematico, se ha desarrollado un nuevo analisis teorico de este dispositivo basado en el espacio de las fases. Este analisis puede ser aplicado a tres casos particulares: el acoplador fundamental, consideracion de saturacion y asimetria, ambos en el indice de refraccion. A continuacion se ha analizado por primera vez el acoplador direccional no lineal de tres ramas, extendiendo el formalismo anterior. Este modelo analitico ha permitido clasificar la utilidad del dispositivo, que, en estudios anteriores, habia sido puesta en duda. Por ultimo se ha realizado el primer analisis de los efectos causados por la realimentacion en el dispositivo.
