Ibr es una glicoproteina de 70-73 kda especifica de eritrocitos maduros de pollo, mientras que ibf (68-70kda) no esta glicosilado y se encuentra en precursores eritroides y celulas no eritroides. Ibr e ibf son productos del mismo gen e interaccionan con la region de inicio de la transcripcion del gen h5 con afinidad y especificidad similares. Ibr es una proteina acidica de 503 aminoacidos, perteneciente a una familia de factores implicados en la regulacion del crecimiento, que incluye p3a2 de erizo de mar, ewg de drosophila y el factor humano nrf-1 alfa-pal. La mitad n-terminal de ibr\/f, conservada durante la evolucion, contiene la mayoria de dominiso funcionales: el dominio de dimerizacion y de interaccion con el adn, una se\u00f1al bipartita de localizacion nuclear y el dominio principal de activacion. El efecto transcripcional de ibr\/f depende de la localizacion de su diana en el promotor. Ibr\/f reprime la transcripcion del gen h5 a traves de su interaccion con las secuencias -13\/+19; en cambio, actua como activador cuando su diana se situa rio arriba del modulo
