Se ha demostrado que estos herbivoros consumen preferentemente determinadas especies algales, mientras que otras son rechazadas, incluso cuando no hay otro alimento disponible.  se analizo la calidad nutritiva de las algas utilizadas, en cuanto a contenido en ceniza, carbono, nitrogeno organico, carbohidratos, proteinas y valor energetico.  ninguno de estos indices quimicos se correlaciono significativamente con las preferencias alimentarias de los gasteropodos, lo que indica que otros factores son mas importantes a la hora de determinar estas preferencias.  por el contrario, se encontro que la presencia de metabolitos secundarios en las algas menos preferidas, alsidium corallinum, caulerpa racemosa y laurencia corrallopsis, esta relacionada con la baja palatabilidad de las mismas. Concretamente, los sesquiterpenos mayoritarios, obtusano, elatol, isoobtusol y obtusol, producidos por laurencia corrallopsis, son los responsables del bajo consumo sobre esta especie, aunque no todos los metabolitos fueron igualmente efectivos con los dos gasteropodos.  el estudio de otros metabolitos secundarios algales mostro que compuestos estructuralmente similares presentan una notable diferencia en sus efectos sobre las preferencias alimentarias de los gasteropodos, por lo que es dificil predecir si un determinado compuesto sera activo o no, basandose unicamente en su estructura quimica.  por otra parte, se desarrollo una metodolog\u00eda adecuada que permite estudiar la toxicidad, a corto plazo, de extractos y metabolitos secundarios algales sobre larvas de peces no
