Estas cepas con capacidad de biotransformar el carbon se han identificado como especies pertenecientes a los generos trichoderma y penicillium. Las siete cepas de hongos utilizan el carbon como unica fuente del carbono para el crecimiento. Cuando los hongos en medios con una fuente de carbono adicional ademas del carbon solubilizan hulla, carbon subbituminoso y lignito. Los hongos se adhieren especifica, activa e irreversiblemente a los fragmentos de carbon cuando se cultivan en estatico. Cuando los hongos se incuban en agitacion, engloban las particulas de carbon por medio de un polimero extracelular, de forma que el medio queda libre de carbon. El mecanismo mas probable de solubilizacion del carbon por los hongos estudiados parece estar constituido, al menos, por la actividad de dos enzimas extracelulares, peroxidasa y esterasa.
