Mediante inmunodeteccion se detectan las tres proteinas receptoras. Los estudios farmacologicos indican la presencia de receptores especificos de pacap (pvri) y de receptores comunes de vip\/pacap, cuyo peso molecular aparente es de 57 kda para los receptores pvrl y 68-70 kda para los receptores comunes de vip\/pacap. Vip y pacap-27 activan la enzima adenilato ciclasa a traves de sus receptores comunes. El estudio de la hidrolisis de fosfatidilinositoles indica que a este nivel vip y pacap actuan a traves de receptores distintos. Por otro lado, el diferente efecto encontrado para pacap-27 y pacap-38 sobre la biosintesis de fosfatidilinositoles apunta una posible heterogeneidad en la clase de receptores pvrl en hbp. Ni vip ni pacap-27 activan la enzima oxido nitrico sintasa.
