Una dosis de mdma (30 mg\/kg i.P.) O mdma (30 mg\/kg i.P., B.I.D., durante 4 dias) se administro a ratas que fueron sacrificadas 3h o 7 dias despues. Como era de esperar, a los dos tiempos de sacrificio tras los tratamientos, el contenido de serotonina (5-ht), descendio significativamente en distintas areas cerebrales al igual que los lugares de recaptacion de 5-ht en la corteza frontal pero no en el tronco cerebral. Contrariamente, la administracion perinatal de mdma no causo disminucion alguna en el contenido indolico. Por otro lado, la densidad de los receptores 5-ht1a y la expresion de su rnam medida mediante rt-pcr, aumento en la corteza frontal, disminuyendo en el hipocampo y tronco 7 dias despues del tratamiento repetido con mdma. Parece que el incremento en la corteza es debido a la lesion de los terminales serotonergicos, mientras que el descenso en el hipocampo y tronco se deben a una alta concentracion plasmatica de corticosterona, ya que la adrenalectomia revirtio los cambios en la densidad del receptor inducidos por la mdma en el hipocampo y tronco, sin modificar los cambios en la corteza.
