Se utilizan para ello dos sistemas experimentales diferentes.  en el primero, las paredes del recipiente estan construidas para que fluya calor a traves de ellas. La altura del fluido utilizada corresponde a una relacion de aspecto 4.5. Cuando aumenta la temperatura del calefactor, se desarrolla un estado convectivo estacionario formado por cuatro celdas. Se muestra que las ecuaciones de los modos espaciales predicen lineas de flujo observadas en el experimento. Si se aumenta mas la temperatura, el sistema bifurca a un nuevo estado estacionario, con una simetria menor, y finalmente se hace dependiente del tiempo.  en el segundo sistema, el calentamiento es inhomogeneo, aunque la seccion de calefaccion es la misma que en el primero. En este sistema se observa un regimen estacionario que, al aumentar la temperatura, se desestabiliza a uno dependiente del tiempo, de caracter cuasiperiodico. Si se aumenta mas el parametro de control el sistema se vuelve caotico.  demostramos que el origen de este comportamiento es la desestabilizacion de la capa limite termica, observando por diferentes metodos su dinamica. Se muestra ademas como el origen de los comportamientos espacio-temporales es escencialmente el mismo, poniendo de manifiesto la generalidad del comportamiento de la capa limite
