Puttnan se distingue por poner en practica unos criterios de produccion que le aseguran el control creativo y economico de sus peliculas y que incluyen la busqueda y desarrollo de la idea, la eleccion del director o el control del montaje. Entiende ademas que el cine es el medio de comunicacion social que mayor influencia ejerce, de donde deduce la responsabilidad social que recae sobre el cineasta.  las constantes tematicas y estilisticas presentes en sus peliculas mas representativas, junto a los criterios de produccion que aseguran el control creativo, permiten hablar tanto de un \u00abmetodo\u00bb como de un \u00abestilo\u00bb caracteristicos de puttnam. En este sentido, puttnam deja una impronta creativa en sus peliculas, equiparable a la del director.
