Se argumenta que, segun smith, la sociedad puede verse como un entrecruzamiento de pasiones. El acento recae sobre el aspecto apetitivo del hombre; el discurso y la racionalidad son dejadas de lado en gran medida. Los origenes de este planteamiento se encuentran en los moralistas franceses del siglo xvii fundamentalmente, por un parte, y en la controversia sobre la supuesta depravacion radical del hombre, por
