Los mutantes carentes del gen rcs1 poseen niveles basales muy reducidos de hierro en el citoplasma, lo que les incapacita para crecer sobre fuentes respirables de carbono. Esta incapacidad es suprimida por la adicion de hierro al medio. La proteina rcs1 sufre cambios post-traduccionales (fosforilacion) dependientes del estado nutricional de la celula. La sobreexpresion de rcs1 causa la parada homogenea de las celulas en la fase g1 del ciclo celular, no siendo este hecho debido a toxicidad por hierro ni a carencia de este
