Utilizando las metalotioneinas moleculas que poseen una elevada capacidad quelatante, se ha dise\u00f1ado vectores de expresion en sistemas procariotas que han permitido su sintesis y posterior caracterizacion espectroscopica. Se ha confirmado que las propiedades coordinativas y caracteristicas estructurales son comparables entre la proteina recombinantes y la nativa.  la sintesis independiente de los dos dominios en los que se estructura la molecula han permitido establecer el comportamiento coordinativo del dominio beta, desconocido hasta la fecha. Paralelamente, se han utilizado vectores de expresion que secretan la metalotioneina recombinante al medio de cultivo, lo cual permitiria la aplicacion directa de los microorganismos en el tratamiento de aguas.  mediante mutagenesis dirigida, se han reemplazado algunas de las cisteinas presentes en la proteina con el objeto de reducir la susceptibilidad a la oxidacion que presenta estas moleculas
