Si la generacion de ambos radicales es suficiente, pueden reaccionar entre si para formar peroxinitrito, de alta capacidad oxidante. El peroxinitrito puede provocar da\u00f1os sobre los lipidos de membrana, lipoperoxidacion, en ausencia de metales de transicion en el medio, por lo que esta accion no esta mediada por el radical hidroxilo, unico responsable hasta el momento.  cuando el oxido nitrico es liberado \u00abin vivo\u00bb en altas concentraciones actua como mediador anti-inflamatorio. El oxido nitrico generado en exceso interactua con multitud de moleculas y estructuras entre las que se encuentra la nadph oxidasa generadora de radical superoxido, inactivandola antes de que sea activada.  por ultimo, la peroduccion de ambos radicales \u00abex vivo\u00bb, es dependiente del ph del medio de incubacion, siendo mayor cuando este ph coincide con el encontrado en la zona inflamada.
