En efecto, la ausencia de un nombre que inscriba a las protagonistas en el engranaje de una sociedad, que en cuanto a patriarcal se sustenta en la genealogia masculina, acarrea profundos problemas tanto fisicos como psiquicos a la subjetividad femenina. En las novelas de burney podemos observar tres claros estadios en la construccion de la identidad femenina: un primer nivel de autopercepcion, como las protagonistas se ven, se sienten y se analizan a si mismas. Un segundo nivel seria el de designacion, como la sociedad patriarcal percibe a las mujeres y designa el modelo ideal de \u00abmujer\u00bb a traves de poderosas instituciones y discursos ideologicos.  finalmente encontrariamos un tercer nivel de representacion del concepto \u00abmujer\u00bb. Un nivel complejo y problematico pues en el entrarian en conflicto la percepcion que las mujeres tenian de si mismas y ese otro prototipo de mujer construido por el patriarcado.
