En la primera parte, de caracter teorico, partiendo de una revision de las distintas acepciones y usos de este elemento en la critica literaria en general y romancistica en particular, se propone una definicion de motivo para el ambito del romancero, una definicion que intenta acotar tal unidad en relacion con las demas unidades romancisticas (funcion, secuencia, formula) y en los distintos niveles del relato, dentro del marco de la teoria comunmente aceptada para el estudio del genero, aquella que deriva del catalogo general del romancero (d.  catalan, 1984).  en la segunda parte se lleva a cabo una puesta en practica del concepto de motivo propuesto a traves del analisis de las versiones gaditanas de cuatro romances:  la aparicion- donde vas, alfonso xii?, Conde ni\u00f1o, alba ni\u00f1a y la bastarda y el segador.
