Detecto la presencia de un biotipo resistente (biotipo r) al herbicida clortoluron. La posterior caracterizacion de este biotipo revelo la existencia de resistencia cruzada a un gran numero de herbicidas pertenecientes a diversas familias quimicas. El estudio de los mecanismos de resistencia a dos de estos herbicidas (clortoluron y diclofop-metil) demostro que la tolerancia del biotipo r a dichas moleculas se basaba en la mayor capacidad demostrada por este biotipo en destoxificar estos herbicidas a compuestos no fitotoxicos, mas que a diferencias en absorcion, translocacion o perdida de sensibilidad en el sitio de accion. Estos procesos metabolicos estan regulados por un grupo de enzimas denominado citocromo p450, y su inhibicion resulto tanto en la disminucion en plantas sensibles y resistentes de la capacidad de metabolizar estos herbicidas como en la perdida del caracter resistente en el biotipo r. Como alternativa de control quimico se recomendo el uso del herbicida glifosato en presiembra.
