Con la finalidad de establecer criterios utiles de diagnostico y prevencion de esta enfermedad en el presente estudio se ha realizado una caracterizacion profunda de f. Maritimus. Para ello, se han analizado cepas de f. Maritimus procedentes de distintas especies de peces y diferentes lugares geograficos. Debido a las dificultades de aislamiento del microorganismo, se ha dise\u00f1ado un medio (fmm, medio para f. Maritimus) apropiado para el aislamiento y cultivo de la bacteria.  posteriormente, se ha llevado a cabo una caracterizacion fenotipica, encontrando una gran homogeneidad entre las cepas a nivel morfologico, fisiologico y bioquimico.  mediante tecnicas serologicas utilizando sueros absorbidos se ha detectado la existencia de heterogeneidad entre los aislados y se han establecido un total de 4 grupos serologicos. La caracterizacion molecular de los componentes de la envoltura celular nos permitio detectar la presencia de antigenos comunes y tambien de diferencias antigenicas relacionadas con los grupos serologicos. El analisis del dna mediante ribotipado demostro la diversidad existente a nivel genomico. Se han analizado factores celulares y extracelulares con el fin de determinar su papel en la patogenesis de la flexibacteriosis. Los aislados de f.  maritimus tenian capacidad para aglutinar eritrocitos de peces y mamiferos, se adherian fuertemente al mucus de rodaballo y eran resistentes a la accion bactericida del mismo. Ademas, los productos extracelulares presentaban actividades enzimaticas, hemoliticas y citotoxicas que pueden estar asociadas con la virulencia de este patogeno. El estudio de los antigenos celulares y extracelulares demostro que las proteinas de f. Maritimus son altamente inmunogenicas para los peces.
