Recientemente se ha publicado la existencia de un carbamil fosfato sintetasa (cps) atipica a estos arqueones. Mientras que las cpss tipicas consisten en un polipetido de 120 kda que esta fusionado o asociado a otro polipeptido de 40 kda, esta cps atipica es un homodimero que muestra una gran similitud de tama\u00f1o y secuencia con las carbamato quinasas (cks). Las cks sintetizan reversiblemente cp a partir de atp y carbamato, pero su funcion hasta ahora descrita \u00abin vivo\u00bb es la de sintetizar atp a partir de adp y del cp derivado del catabolismo de la arginina. En cambio, las cpss sintetizan irreversiblemente cp a partir de amonio, bicarbonato y dos moleculas de atp, en una reaccion en tres pasos, cuyo ultimo paso se corresponde con la reaccion catalizada por la ck. Se ha determinado en nuestro laboratorio la estructura tridimensional de una ck tipica, demostrando que no se parece a la estructura de la cps, y que no es adecuada para calizar la reaccion en tres pasos, con canalizacion intramolecular de intermediarios de la cps.  en la presente tesis se describe el clonado del gen que codifica para la cps atipica de pyrococcus furiosus, asi como la hiperexpresion, purificacion y cristalizacion del enzima recombinante. Tras realizar estudios de difraccion de rayos-x se ha determinado la estructura tridimensional del enzima unido a una molecula de mgatp a una resolucion del 1.5 a. En este trabajo se describe en detalle la estructura del enzima, se caracteriza su centro activo, y se proponen las bases del mecanismo catalitico. Por otro lado, el gran parecido que la estructura de la cps atipica de pyrococcus furiosus presentaba con la de la ck de enterococcus faecalis determinada previamente en nuestro laboratorio nos obligo
