Dicho gen codifica un enzima implicado en la catalisis de la ultima etapa biosintetica que conduce a la elaboracion de penicilinas hidrofobicas por parte del hongo.  el gen estructural se extiende a lo largo de 1241 nucleotidos, y contiene un marco abierto de lectura de 1074 nucleotidos que presenta la insercion de tres intrones en el extremo 5.  el enzima codificado, isopenicilina n aciltransferasa, se ha purificado a homogeneidad electroforetica. Se ha comprobado que tiene un peso molecular de 39.800 +- 1.000 da. Presenta una estructura heterodimerica con dos subunidades de 28.5 y 11 kda, respectivamente.  el gen pende ha sido expresado en a. Nidulans bajo un promotor constitutivo, consiguiendo un aumento de la actividad aat de hasta 389 veces.
