El palmitato potencia la secrecion de insulina inducida por glucosa, efecto que es suprimido por 8-bromo-cgmp, que ademas bloquea el metabolismo del palmitato. El palmitato no modifica la utilizacion de glucosa pero reduce ligeramente la oxidacion de glucosa e incrementa la produccion de lactato. La baja velocidad de la oxidacion de palmitato podria explicar su falta de efecto sobre la glicolisis. La glucosa determina el destino metabolico del palmitato, que es dirigido hacia la sintesis de lipidos a elevadas concentraciones de la hexosa, pudiendo generar mensajeros para la se\u00f1alizacion celular. El palmitato no incrementa la produccion de inositol-1,4,5-trisfosfato pero estimula la translocacion de la proteina quinasa c a 20 mm de glucosa y no a 3mm.  esta translocacion es bloqueada por
