Por ello, se le ha postulado una funcion en el control endogeno de la sensacion dolorosa. El estudio de los mecanismos moleculares de la transcripcion de la prodinorfina podria proporcionar la base para nuevas terapias contra el dolor.  el neuroblastoma nb69 regula la expresion de prodinorfina via proteina quinasa a, lo que remeda en parte a lo que ocurre en medula espinal. En este sistema, estudios a nivel del promotor del gen de la prodinorfina revelan que el elemento dre, situado en el exon 1, es suficiente para que ocurra la expresion regulada de la prodinorfina. El elemento dre es un silenciador a donde se une la proteina represora dream. La activacion transcripcional de la prodinorfina ocurre por perdida de afinidad de dream por su diana cuando la expresion de prodinorfina esta elevada. Este fenomeno esta mediado por la interaccion de dream con la proteina represora acrem.
