Se ha realizado un estudio morfometrico y aloenzimatico comparativo de ciertos taxones de este genero describiendose con uno de ellos una nueva especie para la fauna iberica cobitis vettonica n. Sp. Asi mismo, se ha estudiado la variabilidad genetica de las especies ibericas c. Calderoni, c.  paludica y c. Vettonica.  se ha realizado la filogenia y clasificacion de algunas especies europeas de los generos cobitis y sabanejewia, los cuales formaron cuatro grupos bien diferenciados, siendo estos los siguientes; 1. El subgenero iberocobitis compuesto por las especies c. Maroccana c. Paludica y c.  vettonica. 2. El subgenero acanestrinia formado por las especies c. Elongata. 3. Las especies de los subgeneros anteriormente denominados bicanestrinia y cobitis y 4. El genero sabanejewia compuesto por las especies s. Aurata balcanica y s.
