Se ha comprobado que cadenas del tipo condroitin sulfato (cs) se encuentran asociadas al crecimiento de algunos tractos axonales durante el desarrollo embrionario del sistema nervioso. El papel de estos gags en el crecimiento neuritico se observo tambien in vitro donde eran capaces de promover el crecimiento axonal de neuronas talamicas especificamente, actuando sobre su polaridad. Otros pgs por el contrario, inhiben el crecimiento neuritico: se han purificado pgs de hipocampos lesionados de rata adulta y de etapas postnatales, que inhiben el crecimiento de neuritas en cultivo de forma asimilable a su posible papel fisiologico. Tambien se han fabricado anticuerpos monoclonales contra estos pgs para estudiar su efecto en cultivos, realizar un analisis bioquimico parcial de las moleculas y estudiar su expresion en el modelo de
